Mom on Mondays: I Didn’t Invent Post-It Notes

Everything was going along just fine until the day it arrived in my mailbox. I knew what it was. I had been expecting it. But I had also secretly hoped that perhaps they wouldn’t be able to locate me. Suddenly all of my childhood anxieties came rushing in, sending me into a tailspin. It was an invitation to my High School Class Reunion. I fainted. My roommate shrieked and lunged towards me. The envelope never hit the floor. As I was coming to, I saw him rip the offending packet in half and toss it in the trash. “Clearly...

Mom on Mondays: Into The Dog Days Of Summer

By Mark “Mom” Finley August 3, 2015 Hey Kiddlywinks! How are you feeling? I’m asking because it’s that time of year when everyone usually feels pretty miserable: the Dog Days of summer! It’s commonly thought that the English phrase first appeared in the 1500s, referring to weather that “isn’t fit for a dog”. This isn’t true, though. While our canine friends do seem to suffer greatly at the hand of warm weather, it’s us humans who are at far greater risk of madness brought on by extreme heat. The Dog Days are the time of year in which a...

Mom On Mondays: We Create Until We Break Apart

by Mark “Mom” Finley July 20, 2015 When I first moved to Seattle there were hundreds of fringe theater companies producing some pretty amazing theater in the city. In fact, the first show in which I was cast in Seattle was The Holiday Survival Game Show produced by Alice B. Theatre Company, who called themselves “a gay and lesbian theatre for all people”. It was one of several gay and lesbian theatre companies across the country producing some new and exciting queer theatre. Alice B. Theatre was unfortunately forced to shut its doors in 1997. Gay and lesbian theatre...

Mom On Mondays: Between 40 and Death

by Mark “Mom” Finley July 13, 2015 Hey Kiddlywinks! I have a confession to make. I’m not really 29. I know, I know. You’re shocked. My mother once told me that a true lady never admitted to being older than 29, and I’ve held to that adage for more than a few years now. I recently broke that rule, though, to announce from the Main Stage at this year’s PrideFest that it was the 30th Pride I’ve participated in! So, the cat’s out of the bag. It’s not uncommon for me to be called the World’s Oldest Working Drag Queen....

Mom On Mondays: Ghosts of Prides Passed

by Mark “Mom” Finley June 29, 2015 Hey Kiddlywinks! Another Pride has come and gone, and it’s got me thinking about the many, many Pride celebrations I’ve had the honor of being a part of over my many, many years. I’m not saying I’m old, but I’ve got girdles older than some of the kids in yesterday’s parade. I want to share some of favorite Pride memories this week. Here they are, in no particular order: Hosting Pride Festival at Bobby Morris Playfield – 1993 Twenty years ago the Pride Festival was held the week before the Parade at the...

Mom On Mondays: Quite A Flair

by Mark “Mom” Finley June 15, 2015 Hey Kiddleywinks! I love the theatre. The 69th Annual Tony Awards were broadcast just a week ago, and the big winner of the evening was the musical Fun Home. The musical was written by Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori. It was adapted from Alison Bechdel’s 2006 graphic memoir of the same name, a story about growing up with a closeted gay father and realizing, at an early age, that she was lesbian. Young Allison is played by the amazing, 11 year old Sydney Lucas, a portrayal for which she was also nominated....

Mom on Mondays: Who Is Eunice Burns?

by Mark “Mom” Finley June 8, 2015 Eunice Burns (Madeline Kahn) asks Judy Maxwell (Barbra Streisand) if she knows the meaning of the word propriety in the 1972 film What’s Up, Doc? Hey Kiddleywinks! I was blown away at all the positive response I received from last week’s post. I truly appreciate it! Why? Because my dealings with others online haven’t always been such a positive experience. In fact, some of the disrespect and flat out rude behavior online simply astonishes me. Some of my younger friends tell me that it’s just the way things are nowadays. I would...

Mom On Mondays: Starting Over Again

by Mark “Mom” Finley June 1, 2015 Hello, Kiddleywinks! SHE’S BACK! One thing’s for sure: it’s going to be interesting! Especially considering that most of the time my point of view comes from looking through fuzzy, caterpillar-sized, false eyelashes, under a bumped up wig, poured into a fabric made from something not found in nature, while carefully teetering on 8 inch platform heels and trying not to spill my cocktail! I know, I know: I’ve had so many returns. Maybe you’d prefer if I just stayed gone! I suppose there are plenty of you that have absolutely no idea...
