“We can’t hate ourselves into a version of ourselves we can love.”
―Lori Deschene, author of Tiny Buddha

There are a lot of broken and damaged people in the world. For many of us , it’s a daily battle against childhood programming and the fallout from surviving all sorts of abusive relationships–physical, sexual or emotional. It’s amazing and brave when we learn, as our reader has, that there’s more to life than surviving–and that now it’s time to find a way to thrive.

This week’s reader wrote: I struggle with issues of identity and trauma, including repressed memories and emotional blockages relating to sexual shame and trauma. Hopefully, your reading can help illuminate some of that for me. Blessings!

First of all, reader, you have a good grasp of who you are and what it is that you wish to work on. That’s rare and to be commended. Kudos and blessings to you for your courage and strength.

For this question, I’ve used a basic Three Card Spread, which I usually read as Past, Present, and Future. However, this week, I’m also taking a cue from the highly recommended book “Tarot For Yourself” by Mark K. Greer and designated those positions in the spread as Body, Mind, and Spirit. I’ll also take a peek at the card on the bottom of the deck for a quick Advice for the Situation message.

Here we go.

Ace of Wands

Card 1: Ace of Wands

Body: The physical world. The physical body. Earth element, the material. What do you need in the physical world to achieve joy?

Being the Leader in your own life. Embracing new beginnings. New creativity. Budding sexuality. Raring to go! Really taking charge of your life.

Reader, I’d say the best use of your physical energy right now is to get moving! Find new work that doesn’t drain you, explore new creative or spiritual directions, and embrace the new future that you’re creating! Take a short trip to clear the cobwebs away and change your perspective. The main thing to remember here is that you must follow through on these bright new paths lest they fizzle out and come to nothing.

Card 2: 3 of Wands

Mind: The conscious mind. How you think, and how you manifest what you think in the world. Ideas. Learning.

Time to expand into new directions. Coming into your own power. Believing in yourself, self-confidence. You are more resourceful and more resilient than you know. Putting your plans into action.

You may be discovering a newfound and hard-won sense of agency within yourself, reader. You now know that you’re capable of making plans to better your life and carry them out effectively. You may find yourself less willing to “wait for permission” to move in a direction that you intuitively feel is correct. Instead, you push yourself to “think big, and refuse to limit yourself. You’re taking yourself back. You’ve definitely got a brain, reader–work it! This is where a lot of the impetus for positive inner change comes from– your mind. Think it through. Be prepared to lead, even if only by example.

Card 3: 10 of Swords, reversed

Spirit: Highest Purpose. True Potential. Utilizing your gifts in accordance with your Higher Self.

You have survived! The worst is over, you have nowhere left to go but up. Developing new beliefs and mindsets. New ways of seeing yourself. A new day. End of troubles. Turning the page. A new, more positive chapter of your life. No longer beating a dead horse. Release!

The 10 of Swords in its reversed aspect can be one of the most positive cards in the deck, despite its rather dramatic appearance. Where once was injury, betrayal, and tragedy–now a new day brings healing, serenity, and peace. Once you realize that right now–this is where you are, you can free yourself from the pain of the past and move towards your highest potential. It won’t happen overnight. But it will happen, so don’t lose hope.

Card 4: Strength

Health. Power, Will. Taming one’s inner beast with love, not force. Using anger constructively. Get physical.

Advice for the Situation: Sometimes reader, anger is our friend! Don’t squash it! Don’t pretend it doesn’t exist. Honor your anger. Anger can be a powerful catalyst for positive change. Make friends with it. Use it! Time to remember how strong you really are.

Wrapping it up:

Despite what you’ve been through in the past, reader, as much as you have suffered, you’re currently in the process of rebuilding your identity from a place of radical self-knowledge rather than the outworn ideas you have grown up with. The fact that it incorporates new creativity and spirituality, and boldly expanding past your old limits shows that you have the ability to virtually be your own healer. Listen to your Higher Self and act in your best interest, and use the achievements of the present to help release the pain of the past.
